Meanwhile, Ebony Flyer grew into a massive specimen reaching a height of 17 hands and 1 inch. She won her first four starts on the track; a maiden race, a listed stakes race, a Grade 2 stakes race and a Grade 1 stakes race, the latter of which she easily dispatched Igugu who would go on the following year to Horse of the Year honors. Ebony Flyer met her first defeat in the Grade 1 L'Ormarins Queens Plate as a three-year-old filly facing older rivals and males. Still, she outran history and placed a highly creditable third and earned even more fans in the process. She came back the next year to add victories in three more Graded stakes, two of which were at the Grade 1 level. Ebony Flyer was retired early in her 5-year-old season, with plans made to breed her to the End Sweep stallion Trippi.
